Castle of Dromore
Traditional Irish
The October winds lament
Around the castle of Dromore
Yet peace lies in her lofty halls
My loving treasure store
Though autumn leaves may droop and die
A bud of spring are you sing hush-a-by
Loo, lo-loo, lo-lan,
Sing hush-a-by loo lo loo
Dread spirits all of the Blackwater,
Clan Owen's wild banshee
Bring no ill will to hinder us
My helpless babe and me,
And Holy Mary pitying us
To heaven for grace doth sue,
Sing hush-a-by loo, lo-loo, lo lan
Hush-a-by loo lo lan
Take time to thrive my ray of hope
In the garden of Dromore
Take heed young eaglet
Till thy wings are feathered fit to soar
A little rest and then the world
Is full of work to do
Sing hush-a-by loo,
Lo-loo, lo lan
Sing hush-a-by loo lo lan

PADDY’S LAMENT
Traditional Irish, Arr ©2017
Well it's by the hush, me boys, sure and that's to hold your noise
And listen to poor Paddy's lamentation
For I was by hunger pressed, and in poverty distressed
So I took a thought I'd leave the Irish nation
Well m'self and a hundred more, to America sailed o'er
Our fortunes to be made we were thinking
When we got to Yankee land, they shoved a gun into our hands
Sayin’ "Paddy, you must go and fight for Lincoln"
Here's to you boys, now take my advice
To America I'll have you’ll not be coming
There is nothing here but war, where the murderin' cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Ireland (2. Dublin)
General Moore to us he said, if you get shot or lose your head
Every murdering soul of use will get a pension
Well meself I lost a leg and they gave me a wooden peg,
And begar this is the truth to you I mention
Well I sold my horse and cow, my little pig and sow
My little plot of land I soon did part with
And me sweetheart Peg McGee, I'm afraid I'll never see
For I left her there that morning broken-hearted
Here's to you boys, now take my advice
To Americay I'll have you’ll not be coming
There is nothing here but war, where the murdering cannons roar
And I wish I was at home in dear old Dublin

BRIDGET O’MALLEY
Traditional Irish
Oh Bridget O'Mally, you have my heart shaken
With a hopeless desolation I'd have you to know
It's the wonders of admiration your quiet face has taken
And your beauty will haunt me wherever I go
The white moon above the pale sands
The pale stars above the thorn tree
Are cold beside my darling but no purer than she
I gaze upon the cold moon 'til the stars drown in the warm sea
And the bright eyes of my darling are never on me
My Sunday is weary, My Sunday it is gray now
My heart is a cold thing, my heart is a stone
All joy is dead in me, my life has gone away now
Another has taken my love for his own
The day it is approaching when we were to be married
And it's rather rather I would die than live only to grieve
Oh, meet me my darling ere the sun sets o'er the barley
And I'll meet you there, on the road to Drum slieve.

WILD WIND
Kate Power
At the foot of the mountain stands a high, high tree
Its branches reach up to the sky,
While a red-crested bird leaves her nest in the lee
And from the tallest branch she cries...
"Oh wild wind, won't you blow and carry me to my love,
I know not where to go,
I'll spread my wings, on your windy back I'll ride
Oh, old wise wind won't you blow"
On the banks by the bay where the mossy mussels lay
And the castle on the hill meets the sky
There a red-haired girl fetches dinner from the sea
And walking out the jetty rocks, she cries...
On the road by the wood, there a simple cottage lies
Of thatch and painted windows, inviting me to bide.
The old widow man within it, with his pipe and twinkling eyes
While stoking up the embers there, he cries...
Oh, the cattle with the shepherd and the fishes in the deep
They have no cause for sorrow, no love will trouble thee
If I could be a blackbird in the tallest oaken tree
There from its highest branch, i would cry...
"Oh wild wind, won't you blow,
And carry me to my love, / i know not where to go,
I'll spread my wings / on your windy back i'll ride
Oh, old wise wind won't you blow"

LAKES OF PONTCHARTRAIN
Traditional, Live performance 2-8-2020
T'was on one bright March morning, I bid New Orleans adieu
And I took the rode to Jackson town, my fortune to renew
I cursed all foreign money, no credit could I gain
Which filled my heart with longing for the Lakes of Pontchartain
I stepped on board of a railroad car beneath the morning sun
And I rode the roads 'til evening and I laid me down again
All strangers there, no friend to me 'til a dark girl towards me came
And I fell in love with a Creole girl from the Lakes of Pontchartrain
I said my pretty Creole girl, me money here's no good
If it weren't for the alligators I'd sleep out in the wood
You're welcome here kind stranger, our house it's very plain
But we never turn a stranger out at the Lakes of Pontchartrain
She took me to her mammy's house and she treated me quite well
The hair upon her shoulders in jet black ringlets fell
To try and paint her beauty I'm sure t'would be in vain
So handsome was my Creole girl from the Lakes of Pontchartrain
I asked her if she'd marry me, she'd said it could never be
For she had got another and he was far at sea
She said that she would wait for him and true she would remain
'Til he returned for his Creole girl from the Lakes of Pontchartrain
So fair thee well me bonny o' girl I never see no more
But I'll ne'er forget your kindness and the cottage by the shore
And at each social gathering a flowin' glass I'll raise
And drink a health to me Creole girl from the Lakes of Pontchartrain

NOVA SCOTIA
Kate Power
Never saw a day lovelier
Takes my heart astray to my own true love
He, so far away on over the sea
So far from me
It's out with the tide, we'll haul away, Sully
Bound for Nova Scotia, my sweet love
Is standing by the dockside for me to be greeting
So haul away to my laddie-o
Aye, to hear his voice softly calling
My sails would I hoist, to his land would I go.
Aye, but if he was waiting
Freely would I go (Out with the tide)
Aye, it's been a year since we parted
Woe, how the tears in my breast do arise
Aye, but to know he'd be wanting
Me, there by his side
Standing here, where the ships do meet
For the captain's cheer, a good word for me
"There's a cabin free for the lady;
We sail for the northern sea"

BOLD FISHERMAN
Traditional
There was a bold fisherman who sailed out to Pimlico
To slew the wiley cod fish and the bold mackerel
When he got to Pimlico the stormy winds began to blow
And his little boat went wibble-wobble and overboard went he
Singing twinkle doodle dum, twinkle doodle dum
Twas the highly interesting song he sung
Twinkle doodle dum, twinkle doodle dum
Sang the bold fisherman
He wriggled and he scriggled in the ocean so briney-o
He yellowed and he bellowed for help but in vain
Downward he did gently glide to the bottom of the silvery tide
Previously to this he cried, “Fare thee well, Mary Jane!”
Singing twinkle doodle dum, twinkle doodle dum
Twas the highly interesting song he sung
Twinkle doodle dum, twinkle doodle dum
Sang the bold fisherman
His ghost walked at midnight by the bed of his Mary Jane
When he told her how dead he was, she said, “I’ll go mad!”
“If my lovey is so dead, said she, no joy on earth there’ll ever be
I never more will happy be” and she went raving mad.
Singing twinkle doodle dum, twinkle doodle dum
Twas the highly interesting song she sung
Twinkle doodle dum, twinkle doodle dum
Sang the bold fisherman

RIVER WALTZ
Kate Power
All of the rivers run to the sea
By you and me from the highest peak
Stand and deliver your hand to me
And I’ll dance this dance with you
Around in a circle the season is spinning
The leaves are on the vine,
The sound of the fiddle and the twinkling in
Your eye, here in the riddle of time
Simple pleasures do comfort me
Like squirrels in trees, and honeybees.
Secret treasures in bottomless seas
Our own sweet discovery
Around in a circle the season is spinning
The leaves are on the vine
The sound of the fiddle and the twinkling in
Your eye, here in the riddle of time

UNDRESSED MELODY
Kate Power ©1983
So alive with you by my side.
A day without you draws night within me.
How can I even try growing older without you now?
Every moment we carry in life
Holding together in sorrow and light,
Finding the morning with you by my side,
Fills me so gladly to feel you there.

SOMETHING ONCE
Kate Power
I was something once, all bright and new,
Now I feel my age and it’s old
There was something nice beneath the sweet moonlight,
Now I pull on my sweater I’m cold
When my eyes were brightly shining, in the laughter and crying
No, I don’t remember trying, we just went the way we go
There was someone once, he was good and true,
He’s been gone for a long time now
I remember him, and I remember you,
I remember the why’s and how
When my legs were strong and sturdy and I walked the hills and journeyed,
Standing pints and rising early to milk the jersey cow.
That was long ago, the only one who knows what it was back then is me
Even I don’t know, it’s like a movie show there inside my memories
When I’d meet you bright and shining between laughter and crying,
Sure, I don’t remember trying, we just went the way we go.
Sure, I was something once, all bright and new
