THE BEST YOU CAN
(Back Gate)
Music & words by Kate Power ©1999
In the morning as I get up from my bed
Without a warning feel this brewing in my head
It’s like a storm, I feel this restlessness
I think of you in stormy weather
Like the birds fly before you know which way they’ve gone
And turn to blue sky, like a memory in a song
We used to sing, we sang it soft and slow
Like everything, you made it better
My, my, isn’t life a funny climb when all is said and done
You try and try, to do your best to understand
You do the best you can
Out the window, where I used to shout out your name in winter weather
Where you told me when that old sun came out
I think of you in stormy weather
Light the candle, so you can find your way to turn the handle
To that old back gate and come to me, don’t ever hesitate
I’m here for you, I’m here for you
In the morning as I get up from my bed a gusty storming,
Knitting clouds across my head, I think of you and how I used to be
When we were young, without a worry

ANNABELLE

Annabelle, won’t you come back home?
There’s supper on the stove
You’ve been away such a long, long time,
I hardly know you.
Won’t you come back home?
There’s supper on the stove
Won’t you come back home?
There’s supper on the stove
Precious children grow so fast, then they leave us all alone
We’ve got to love them while we can, before we’re dead and gone
Won’t you come back home?
There’s supper on the stove
Won’t you come back home?
There’s supper on the stove

SIRENS
Kate Power
Candlelight in the window, burning brighter than a holy wick glow
Lead my boat into safe harbour, take me through these rocky waters
Stormy weather winds blow, and toss me off far from my destination
Folding me in blinding weather,
I’m in your hands, I’m barely bound together
I’m blowing in from deep water, I’m blowing in from sea
And I’m holding my eye on the beacon.
Bring me in.
Sirens sound in the wind, or is it the bell in the buoy moaning?
There, I hear it again
I’m coming about, I’m rowing
Like a gusty gull in the air, skimming top of the deepest ocean
Stirring fish in salty water, chasing fin from seal to otter
I’m blowing in from deep water, I’m blowing in from sea.
Won’t you hold me in your line of vision?
Bring me in.
Sirens sound in the wind, or is it the bell in the buoy moaning?
There, I hear it again
I’m coming about, I’m rowing

MERCY HIGH, MERCY LOW
Kate Power
I can't love you more than I do, true loving is hard to explain
You've seen me through, you see through me,
You see the things that I do
Mercy high, mercy low, no goodbye, just hello
Come right here, don't you go
Here under sky on stepping ground, take my hand, turn around
And we'll waltz up sweet memories
I do love you more than old shoes, more than the sun on the rain
There's nobody's got somebody the way I’ve got you on the brain
Mercy high, mercy low, no goodbye, just hello
Come right here, don't you go
Here under sky on stepping ground, take my hand, turn around
And we'll waltz up sweet memories
Hold me, let's dance together
One, two, three
Steps break like sudden feathers
And hearts break free
I was so wrong, you were so gone, I never got over your name
Just to lose you, forever, now we're dancing together again
Mercy high, mercy low, no goodbye, just hello
Come right here, don't you go
Here under sky on stepping ground, take my hand, turn around
And we'll waltz up sweet memories
Hold me, let's dance together
You lead me
Waves break in turning weather
and hearts break free

MARIACHI MAN
Lyrics by Kate Power
Music by Steve Einhorn
There’s a table in the other room
Framed upon it are some children laughing
And some favorite people that I knew, I was younger then
There was my brother and my sister too
They held my hand and we were all together
We made a promise to be good and true, we’ve always been
When something in my world shakes
When something in my heart breaks
Before I come undone, I remember you
I go along a long and winding way
I take myself and all my memories with me
No matter where I am, I find my way, I think of you
I heard it in your voice the other day
You were going in your own direction
In the distance them, so far away, I was missing you
It’s here we live, it’s here we while away
Minutes full of running weeks of ours
I know that there will come a day, wishes come true
When something in my soul shakes
And something in my heart wakes
The two of us as one, me and you

OLIVE OIL’S SONG FOR POPEYE
Kate Power
Honey, isn’t it funny, special deliveries that don’t go through?
Sunny Aloysius and honey, to Mexico, we could go too
And we could take our time and make up silly rhymes
And I could sing my song to you
Baby, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet as pie, right as rain
Sweetpea in the bed fed and sleepy, hammock’s tight, all snug and true
Then I hear the sound of you, I turn around to you,
I turn myself around
Poor baby, never time to get lazy, too little time, too much to do
Honey, with your handyman money we could go out and paint the town
I could hold you tight under the soft moonlight
And we could dance our dance in two.

SOMETHING ONCE
Kate Power
I was something once, all bright and new,
Now I feel my age and it’s old
There was something nice beneath the sweet moonlight,
Now I pull on my sweater I’m cold
When my eyes were brightly shining, in the laughter and crying
No, I don’t remember trying, we just went the way we go
There was someone once, he was good and true,
He’s been gone for a long time now
I remember him, and I remember you,
I remember the why’s and how
When my legs were strong and sturdy and I walked the hills and journeyed,
Standing pints and rising early to milk the jersey cow.
That was long ago, the only one who knows what it was back then is me
Even I don’t know, it’s like a movie show there inside my memories
When I’d meet you bright and shining between laughter and crying,
Sure, I don’t remember trying, we just went the way we go.
Sure, I was something once, all bright and new

“Their music embodies reverence for this complicated, terrible, beautiful world that we live in. All time stops when they sing together." - Tracy Grammer
